Help Roxbury Community Fridge find a home

The Highland Avenue Little Free Library has offered to assist Roxbury Community Fridge with finding a location.

A community fridge is a refrigerator and pantry set up in a well-trafficked area, where community members can leave and take food as a form of mutual aid.

Several community fridges exist in the Boston area: South End Community Fridge, Cambridge Community Fridge, Mattapan Community Fridge, Symphony/Northeastern Community Fridge, Boston/JP Community Fridge, and Dorchester Community Fridge.

Roxbury Community Fridge is raising money to be able to build a shed and have some funds for electricity, maintenance, and so forth. Highland Avenue Little Free Library has committed to help them out with a big chunk of their project by donating a refrigerator/freezer in good condition, but Roxbury Community Fridge still needs to find a location.

Do you have a home or business that might work? At the very least, they would need:

  • A location along a well-traveled street or path
  • Access to electricity (could be an extension cord out a window or door as long as it can be done safely; the organization would pay for the electricity and provide a watertight extension cord and secure everything safely)
  • Permission from the building owner
If you have a suitable location in Roxbury, please contact Roxbury Community Fridge through their Instagram.

Once a location is identified, there will be more volunteer opportunities to build a shed, paint the fridge, and serve as a fridge monitor.
